GNOME Desktop Components
The following sections describe the different architectural components which
compose the GNOME user interface.
- Control Center
- This section covers the GNOME Control Center. It allows configuration of
a user's desktop (for example, the desktop's background color).
- Panel
- The GNOME Panel with it's applet concepts.
- Desktop Icons and File Manager
- The handling of objects on the background of the desktop (e.g. icons) and
the management of files are described here.
- Session Management
-
Session Management is the way GNOME handles logging in and logging
out. It saves and restores the states of programs, and provides a
mechanism for the user to take "snapshots" of their desktop.
- Display Manager
- The GNOME Display Manager is a sophisticated XDM replacement.
- File System
-
This section discusses how GNOME interacts with the rest of the File
System. It will cover VFS, Mime types, Metadata, and other file related
operations.
- Window Management
- Here you'll find information on GNOME's relation to Window Managers.
